Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine (2014-2017)
Valeria GONTAREVA was the Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine from June 2014 to May 2017. She is the first woman to lead Ukraine’s central bank, where she oversaw vital reforms to clean up Ukraine’s banking sector, strengthened regulatory supervision, implemented “inflation targeting” monetary policy and ensured the independence of the National Bank. When she joined the National Bank of Ukraine, she had over two decades of private sector experience in Ukrainian and international financial institutions, beginning her career in 1993. Prior to moving to ING Bank Ukraine in 2001, where she rose to first Deputy Chairman of the Board, she worked at the Kyiv branch of Bank Société Générale from 1996 to 2000. Later, between 2007 and 2014, she led the Investment Capital Ukraine (ICU), a top Ukrainian financial services group. Mrs. Gontareva obtained her master’s degree in Economics from Kyiv National Economic University in 1997 and graduated from Kyiv Polytechnic Institute in 1987.
