Weymouth Lally Graham

Lally Graham WEYMOUTH is the Senior Associate Editor of The Washington Post. She currently serves as a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Economic Club of New York and is a member of the Board of the Asia Society Policy Institute’s Council. She has been conducting exclusive interviews with world leaders for over 25 years. In March of 2018, Ms. Weymouth interviewed Chilean President Sebastian Piñera the week after his inauguration, Pakistan's Prime Minister, Shahid Khaqan Abassi to discuss the declining state of U.S.-Pakistan relations. In 2017, she conducted the first foreign interview with South Korea’s new President Moon Jae-in in Seoul to talk about the crisis in North Korea. Additionally, she interviewed Italy’s new Prime Minister Gentilioni to discuss the flow of refugees into his country, Jordan’s King Abdullah II discussing the Islamic State and the future of Syria, President of Estonia Kersti Kaljulaid about the threat of Russia’s cyber and information wars, President of Lithuania Dailia Grybauskaite about Russian provocations and her country’s geographic vulnerability, President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq Masoud Barzani about the battle for Mosul. Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen gave Ms. Weymouth her first interview after taking office in Taipei in July 2016. Brazil’s president Michel Temer granted his first foreign interview to Ms. Weymouth in June 2016. She also traveled to Myanmar to interview Daw Aung San Suu Kyi following her party’s overwhelming victory in her country’s elections in 2016. She has interviewed every Israeli Prime Minister since 1981, including Shimon Peres, Yitzhak Rabin, and, most recently, Benjamin Netanyahu. In 1984, former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein granted Mrs. Weymouth the first print interview to an American journalist. She also interviewed Colonel Muammar Gaddafi in his tent in the Libyan Desert in 2003. Both Syrian Presidents Hafez and Bashar Assad granted her exclusive interviews. Ms. Weymouth conducted the last interview with Pakistan’s Benazir Bhutto before her assassination in December of 2007. In 2015, she was awarded the May Chidiac Foundation’s Antoine Choueiri Special Tribute for Lifetime Achievement. In September of 2016, the Citizens Union of the City of New York honored her with the Civil Society Builder Award. Ms. Weymouth graduated from Radcliffe College with honors. She edited and compiled Thomas Jefferson: The Man, His World, His Influence, a collection that includes contributions from leading Jefferson scholars. She is the co-author of America in 1876: The Way We Were, which was published by Random House in 1976.
