Marieluise BECK is a co-founder and the Direc¬to¬r for East-Central and Eastern Europe of the Center for Liberal Moder¬nity (LibMod), a think-tank established in 2017. She is a politi¬cian specializing in foreign affairs with a focus on Eastern and South-East Europe and well-respected among the parties. She is held in high regard as a defender of human rights-ori¬ented foreign and secu¬rity pol¬i¬tics and has broad net¬works in pol¬i¬tics and civil society in Ukraine, Russia, and South-East Europe. In addi¬tion to her polit¬i-cal work, she has repeat¬edly devoted herself to human¬i¬tar¬ian causes. She carries the Order of Merit with Ribbon of the Federal Repub¬lic of Germany. In 2016, she was awarded the Ramer Award for Courage in the Defense of Democ¬racy by the Amer¬i¬can Jewish Com¬mit¬tee (AJC). She was a member of the Bundestag from 1983 to 2017. During her time at the German Parliament, she was a spokesper¬son of the first green par¬lia¬men¬tary group in 1983, a Commissioner for Migration, Refugees and Integration within the red-green coalition government from 1998, the Par¬lia¬men¬tary State Sec¬re¬tary in the Federal Min¬istry of Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, and a member of the Com¬mit¬tee on Foreign Affairs from 2005. In addi¬tion, Marieluise Beck was a member of the Par¬lia¬men¬tary Assem¬bly of the Council of Europe, where she joined the Alliance of Lib¬er¬als and Democ¬rats for Europe (ALDE). She is a board member of the “Peters¬burger Dialog”, a Russia and Germany dialogue forum. During the Bosnian War, she founded an organ¬i¬za¬tion “Brücke der Hoff¬nung” (Bridge of Hope). Since its establishment, the organization has invested more than 10 million Euros into human¬i¬tar¬ian projects.
