Alejandro Alvargonzález is the Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy at NATO since September 2016. He joined the Spanish Diplomatic Corps in 1987 and since then has held numerous leadership positions. From 2000 to 2002, he was the Director of the Cabinet of the Secretary of State for Security at the Ministry of the Interior. Later, he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, where he worked as Deputy Director of Asia for Political Affairs in 2002- 2004, the Consul General of Spain in Shanghai in 2004-2007, and the Deputy Director for International Economic Relations with Developing Countries in 2007 - 2009. His had other assignments in Geneva, Havana, Cairo, and Central America. H.E. Mr. Alvargonzález was appointed to be the Ambassador of Spain to Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2009, and in 2012 he transferred to work at the Ministry of Defense as the Secretary General for Defense Policy. Throughout his career, he has written a number of articles, spoke at many conferences, and lectured at different universities. He has a degree in Political Science from Madrid Complutense University and speaks English, French, and Spanish. Mr. Alvargonzález was born on July 21st, 1959. He is married and has two children.
