Borys Gudziak was born in 1960 in Syracuse, NY to Ukrainian immigrants. He received degrees from Syracuse University, the Pontifical Urban University, and the Pontifical Oriental Institute. He holds a doctorate in Slavic and Byzantine Cultural and Ecclesiastical History from Harvard University (1992) He moved to Ukraine in 1992 to develop the Ukrainian Catholic University — the first Catholic University in the former Soviet Union. He taught in Ukraine for 20 years and lead the university for 12 years as rector. He has many scholarly, analytic, and journalistic publications. In 2012, Gudziak was ordained as Bishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) for France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxemburg, and Switzerland. In 2019, Bishop Gudziak was enthroned as Metropolitan and Archbishop of Philadelphia for Ukrainian Catholics in the US. Archbishop Gudziak is chairman of the Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development - United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and a member of the Dicastery for the Oriental Churches and the Dicastery for Communication in Rome. He holds Honorary Doctorates from: Syracuse University (2018), University of Notre Dame (2022), Catholic University of America (2022), Ave Maria School of Law (2023), University of San Francisco (2023), and Seton Hall University (2023). He heads the Department of External Church Relations of the UGCC and was awarded with the French Order of the Legion of Honor (2015), the Polish Jan Nowak-Jeziorański Award (2016), the Notre Dame University Award (2019), the Catholic Faith Network Award of Excellence (2023), Cross of Ivan Mazepa (2023), Ellis Island Medal of Honor (2024), CNEWA Faith and Culture Award (2024), and Order of Merit, First Class (2025). Archbishop Gudziak is on the Board of Trustees of the Catholic University of America and the Board of Directors of the Children of Heroes Fund. He is President of the Senate (Board of Trustees) of the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv. He continues to be an active member of “Plast” Ukrainian Scouting Organization and heads its supervisory board in Ukraine. Archbishop Gudziak is an honorary citizen of Lviv.
