Günter Sautter is the Foreign Policy and Security Advisor to the Federal Chancellor as of May 2025. Previously, he held the position of Political Director of the Federal Foreign Office from 2024. From 2022 to 2024, he was Head of the Directorate-General for International Order, the United Nations and Arms Control at the Federal Foreign Office. Prior to that, he was the Deputy Permanent Representative of the Federal Republic of Germany to the United Nations in New York from 2020 to 2022. He was Head of the State Secretaries’ Office at the Federal Foreign Office from 2017 to 2020. From 2014 to 2017, he worked in the Minister’s Office, and from 2011 to 2013 in the Policy Planning Staff. From 2008 to 2011, he was a Desk Officer at the Permanent Representation of the Federal Republic of Germany to the European Union in Brussels, and from 2005 to 2008, Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy in Managua. He has been a member of the Foreign Service since 2002.
