Borys Gudziak is an American prelate who has led the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia as Metropolitan-Archbishop since 2019. He founded the Institute of Church History and has served the Ukrainian Catholic University first as rector and now as president, playing a key role in the development of theological and academic education in Ukraine. He is the author of more than 50 studies on Church history, theological education, and cultural topics, and has organized numerous international academic conferences. In 2012, he was appointed Apostolic Exarch for Ukrainian Greek Catholics in France, Switzerland, and the Benelux countries and was ordained a bishop. In 2013, he became the first bishop of the Eparchy of St. Volodymyr the Great. In 2019, Pope Francis appointed him Archbishop of Philadelphia and later included him in the Congregation for the Oriental Churches and the Dicastery for Communication. Metropolitan Gudziak holds a Ph.D. in Slavic and Byzantine Cultural History from Harvard University (1992). He has received numerous distinctions, including the French Legion of Honor, the Ukrainian Order of Merit (2nd Class), the Ivan Mazepa Cross, and the Vasyl Stus Prize.
