Head of the Center for Civil Liberties, human rights lawyer, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate 2022
Oleksandra Matviichuk is a Ukrainian lawyer, human rights defender, women activist and civil society leader based in Kyiv. Oleksandra the founder and permanent head of the Center for Civil Liberties a 2022 Nobel Peace Prize-winning organization. Author of a number of alternative reports for various bodies of the UN, the Council of Europe, the European Union, the OSCE and the International Criminal Court, including: “The Price of Freedom” on crimes against peaceful protesters during the Maidan (2014), “28 Hostages of the Kremlin” about political prisoners of Ukrainian citizens in Russia and occupied Crimea (2015), report “Eastern Ukraine: civilians caught in the crossfire” (2015); “The Peninsula of Fear: a chronicle of the occupation and human rights violations in the Crimea” (2016), “Surviving Hell: Testimonies of Victims on Places of Illegal Detention in Donbas”, etc. (2016). In 2016 she received the Democracy Defender Award for "Exclusive Contribution to Promoting Democracy and Human Rights" from missions to the OSCE. In 2017 she became the first woman to participate in the Ukrainian Emerging Leaders Program of Stanford University. After Russia’s attack on Ukraine in February 2022, she concentrated on documenting war crimes against the civilian population perpetrated by Russian soldiers in the occupied areas.
