Michael Gahler (*1960) has been a Member of the European Parliament since 1999 and is currently serving as the Parliament’s Standing Rapporteur on Ukraine and on Tunisia. He is the Leader of the European People’s Party’s Group in the Committee on Foreign Affairs as well as a Substitute Member of the Subcommittee on Security and Defence. He studied law in Germany and in France before completing the Diplomatic Academy of the German Foreign Office. He served in the Foreign Office’s department of International Environmental Policy and the department for the Baltic States and the Council of the Baltic Sea states. He was a Member of the International Office of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) under its Chairman Helmut Kohl.
