Director, Head of Support Group for Ukraine , European Commission
Peter M. WAGNER is the Head of the Support Group for Ukraine (SGUA) and the Director in the European Commission's Directorate-General for Neighborhood and Enlargement Negotiations (DG NEAR) since December 2015. In September 2011, he became an adviser for the newly created Commission Task Force on Greece (TFGR), where he was mainly in charge of the overall management and coordination of the TFGR, as well as the preparation of a wider service for EU support to growth-enhancing reforms in the Member States launched in summer 2015. In 1999, after an open competition, Dr. Wagner entered the European Commission's Directorate General for Industry where he worked on regulatory and policy coordination. In May 2005, he was appointed Head of Unit in the Directorate General for Enterprise and Industry for "General coordination," where he was inter alia in charge of general policy coordination, relations with the Member States and the Council, and the Competitiveness and Innovation Framework program. In September 2010, he became Head of the Unit in charge of the defense, aeronautic and maritime industries as well as the European Commission's relations with the European Defense Agency. After having worked as an editor for several German newspapers, he joined the Centre for Applied Policy Research (CAP) in Mainz in 1993 (as of 1995 in Munich). At the CAP, he mainly worked on international affairs. Dr. Wagner is the author and editor of four books and many articles on issues such as international politics, foreign policy, and the EU industrial policy. Between 1982 and 1986, he followed a traineeship program in journalism, worked as a journalist and completed his military service. Dr. Wagner was educated at the Universities of Freiburg and Mainz (Germany) and Vienna (Austria). He holds an M.A and a Ph.D. in Political Science, History and Psychology from Freiburg University.
