Ukraine will probably have to fight again for its sovereignty in future – ex-President of the World Bank
20 September 2013

Because of its cooperation with Europe, in the future Ukraine will have to defend its sovereignty in the East, stated Robert Zoellick, President of the World Bank (2007-2012) at the 10th Annual Meeting of YES “Changing Ukraine in a Changing World: Factors of Success” in the Livadia Palace, Crimea, on Friday.

“It’s not only economy that is in question but also the political and sovereign future of Ukraine. That doesn’t mean Ukraine shouldn’t build good relationships with its neighbors. However, the pressure currently being imposed on Ukraine, especially lately, may evidence acute sovereignty issues to arise in the future, and Ukraine will possibly have to fight for its independence all over again”, the banker said about the situation arising from the potential  signing of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union.

At the same time, Zoellick expressed his hope that, regardless of the political differences in the country, Ukraine would be able to take advantage of the opportunity and continue its progress towards modernity.  “Ukraine is a country with huge potential; will that lead to stability and open new opportunities, given the levels of rivalry and competition across the globe? I think that with the European Union’s assistance these issues could be solved much more easily”, the banker added.

In addition, the former Head of the World Bank distinguished the significant role of Ukraine in the global agricultural market. Demand is growing constantly. Ukraine may benefit from it. This seems to me as important for Ukraine’s future as any political developments we have been witnessing lately”, Zoellick said.
