Europe must show solidarity on refugees – Jean Asselborn

Europe must show solidarity on refugees – Jean Asselborn
10 September 2015

Europe must show solidarity with regard to refugees from Syria the way it did during the Yugoslavia conflict, Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn has said at the 12th Yalta European Strategy (YES) Annual Meeting.

"We are facing the problem of migration, the large number of migrants to the EU… First, we should decide what to do with those who are already there (in Europe). We can redistribute them based on the principle of solidarity… Let us recall what Europe did after the collapse of Yugoslavia: it accepted dozens of thousands of refugees with great solidarity. Today we also need solidarity with those who found themselves in a very difficult situation," he said.

Asselborn added that there could be no distribution by the colour of people's skin or religion in Europe. He suggested that every EU member-state should act a part of one union and show solidarity in dealing with the refugee problems.

The 12th Yalta European Strategy Annual Meeting will be streamed live at yes-ukraine.org as well as web-sites of the Media Partners in English and Ukrainian.

The official Twitter of the 12th YES Annual Meeting is @yes_ukraine, and participants and followers can include the hashtag: #YESUkraine2015.
