Results of EU elections open new chapter, offer Ukraine a chance – Aleksander Kwasniewski
16 September 2017

Results of the recent elections in EU countries open a new chapter in the life of the union and offer new chances for Ukraine, President of Poland (1995-2005) and Chairman of the YES Board Aleksander Kwasniewski has said in his closing remarks at the 14th Yalta European Strategy Annual Meeting organized by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation.

"I have some optimistic information for Ukraine because many fears which we had before the French election have been overcome. Today we have a new Europe, especially after the German election which, thank God, is quite predictable. This means that European policy, international policy of Germany will not change. And this means that after this election Europe will have a new chapter, a new process of acceleration and deeper integration," he said.

Kwasniewski added that the situation with long-term talks between the UK and the EU offers Ukraine a new chance.

"In the situation with long-lasting difficult negotiations with the UK about Brexit, the chance for Ukraine is bigger and not smaller. If your hard work and homework are efficient enough, in this new construction, this changed construction of the EU we can more easily find a place for Ukraine than in such a very conservative concept of the EU which we had before Brexit," he concluded.
