“Credit Model” of Economic Development Has Exhausted Itself – Martin Wolf

Encouraging consumption, which underlies the pre-crisis model of economic development, has exhausted itself. This opinion was voiced by Martin Wolf, Financial Times Chief Economics Commentator. He was arguing on this issue with his old opponent Larry Summers, during a panel discussion on the global economy, at the 10th Annual Meeting of Yalta European Strategy.

Summers believes that the major problem we have to solve is the better education of our children.  His view is that we are now dealing with the first generation of children who will not live better than their parents, because their education has not been good enough to enable them to stimulate economic growth.  Martin Wolf insists upon the fact that the implementation of this principle stimulated the impetuous consumption behavior adopted by people all around the world. He argues that promoting consumption paved the way for the “credit model” of economy, which prevailed before the 2008 recession.

“The system operated on the basis that wealthy people were lending money to the poor. But that didn’t work!” Wolf challenged. He believes the growing inequality we see today – both between people and between countries – is associated with the “credit model”. “The model is unstable in many countries, which causes credit soap bubbles to grow,” Wolf said.
