Motivation, strength and intelligence are key characteristics of a Ukrainian warfighter - Hanna Maliar

13 September 2022

Motivation, strength, intelligence, sincerity and kindness are the main features distinguishing a Ukrainian soldier from a typical Russian invader.

That was stated by Hanna Maliar, Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine, at the 17th Yalta European Strategy (YES) Annual Meeting “Ukraine: Defending All Our Freedom”, organised by YES in partnership with the Victor Pinchuk Foundation.

“Firstly, the Russians are at an obvious advantage in terms of military personnel and weapons. At the same time, the warfighters of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are more motivated since they are fighting a just war and defending their Homeland. Secondly, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are distinct in view of their intellectual approach, while the Russian Federation relies on the fact that they are more in number. Thirdly, our army is distinguished by being civil as our military adheres to the rules and customs of war and all norms of the Geneva Conventions,” said the Deputy Minister.

According to her, the last six months have demonstrated to the whole world that this is not just a war – it is a confrontation of civilization and medieval barbarism.

“This is not a war only between Ukraine and Russia – It is a confrontation between civilization and medieval barbarism. We are observing that civilization, despite its values, cannot prevent wars in the world,” noted Hanna Maliar.
