Europe Needs to Enhance its Negotiations with Turkey - Gerhard Schröder

21 September 2013

The European Union needs to enhance negotiations with Turkey concerning its possible membership of the EU, Gerhard Schröder, former Chancellor of Germany (1998-2005), stated  on Saturday at the 10th Annual Meeting of YES “Changing Ukraine in a Changing World: Factors of Success” in Yalta.

“We are all interested in cooperation with Turkey in the effort to push these negotiations forward. Because, unless we succeed in it, it may happen that the will of Turkish people to see their country an EU member will fade, ” Mr. Schröder said during the discussion “Europe: Destination Unknown”.In his opinion, the problem lies in the fact that the EU Council does not completely understand that Europe needs Turkey to further its own interests.  The economy and geopolitical situation may mean Turkey becomes a model for the regions of North Africa and the Middle East.
In his turn, another participant in the discussion – Egemen Bağış, Minister for European Union Affairs and Chief Negotiator of Turkey, said: “We have been actually waiting for 41 years to join the European Union.  In the beginning  78% of our population supported joining the EU.  By contrast, a recent survey showed that support has declined to 45%. When you ask people whether Turkey will be ever accepted to the EU, only 25% give a positive answer. When you ask if the European Union reforms will be good for Turkey, 75% say yes.”
