Government looking for best model of land market to protect Ukrainians’ rights - Groysman

The Government is looking for a model of land market organisation which would best protect the rights and interests of Ukrainians, Ukrainian Prime Minister, Volodymyr Groysman, has said at the 13th Annual Meeting of the Yalta European Strategy (YES).

“I know for sure that Ukrainian land must make Ukrainians - who own this land - not poorer but richer. We will test out and analyse different approches, to ensure that we can develop a land market that protects its owners,” he said.

Groysman added that it was very important to take into account the opinion of land owners, not politicians. He also warned against repeating the mistakes made during the privatisation in the 1990s.

“As far as land is concerned, it is a very contentious issue in Ukraine. It is so important however, that we can’t afford to make a mistake. We remember the start of the privatisation in Ukraine, when national treasures ended up in the wrong hands. Our task today is to put conditions in place which would provide protection for current owners,” the Prime Minister concluded.
